Quick Craft: Custom Coasters

My mom's birthday is coming up, and I wanted to make her something pretty and useful. My parents are to the point where they basically get everything they want and need themselves, so I had a mind to make them something homemade. The other day, I was over at her house and she mentioned how she was in need of coasters. It was then that I decided to make her some!

Whilst at my favorite thrift store the other day, I found a perfect set of 4 white porcelain ramekins that were perfect. I am not absolutely sure whether they are actually coasters or are meant to be some sort of dipping trays, but for $0.39 each, they were perfect for what I was looking for. I picked up a roll of self-adhesive cork board to use for the bottom, and got to work.

I cleaned the porcelain pieces and then found a cup in my pantry that was the approximate size of the inside of the ramekins, then simply used my Exact-o knife to cut a piece out of the cork board and placed it in the middle. I did this for all 4 of the new coasters and then made sure they were all flat.

I decided to do a simple heart on the cork, so I cut a foam circle with the same cup and used the knife to cut a heart pattern out of the middle. I simply put the foam template over the cork and used a Sharpie to fill in the color.

When they were all dry, I put a quick layer of Mod Podge over the cork to seal it all in, and done!

It was quick and easy. Not my best work, but not bad for about ~30 of craft time. I think they'll use them well and my mom will enjoy a fun, homemade gift!

(I am 99.99999% sure that my mother does not read my blog, but if you see this, Mom, act surprised! Love you!)
